Abstract
This critically appraised topic focused on the effectiveness that mirror therapy has in decreasing pain in individuals with upper or lower extremity amputations. The number of individuals with amputations in the United States is projected to increase to over 3.6 million by the year of 2050 with an estimated incidence rate of 185,000 patients per year. Ultimately, individuals with amputations are subject to causing greater cost to society. With the increased medical needs as well as specialized services, individuals with amputations are creating an increased financial burden on many. Utilizing impactful intervention strategies is one way to combat this trend. Mirror therapy proved to be an effective strategy at decreasing pain intensity and duration in individuals who are experiencing pain in their residual limb secondary to an amputation.
