Abstract
The purpose of this CAT was to examine the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions, including parent training and behavioral skills education, for enhancing family participation in daily life and routines of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Challenging behaviors exhibited by children with ASD including repetitive performance patterns, and insistence on sameness within routines can cause impact family cohesion and cause caregivers to experience greater levels of stress. It was determined that parent training interventions including cognitive-behavioral strategies, coaching skills, and environmental adaptations can be implemented by occupational therapists in home and community settings to support family and caregiver needs of children with ASD to help lower the burden of parental stress and improve family participation in daily life and routines.
