Abstract
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a significant condition that affects a number of children in the US, causing developmental delays, and motor and cognitive deficits. Caregivers of children with CP often feel unprepared to care for their children, which in turn affects parent stress and child quality of life. Occupational therapists frequently work with children with CP to address deficits and improve quality of life, and the care for the child often includes parent education, although typically in an informal manner. This study investigated the impact of structured caregiver training programs on increased quality of life of children with cerebral palsy. 7 articles were reviewed to assess how these training programs affected quality of life outcomes in children with CP. There was mixed evidence demonstrating the efficacy of training programs to improve quality of life for children with CP. More research is needed to investigate the efficacy of these programs and to further assess how occupational therapy can work with caregivers to promote quality of life gains for children with CP.
